Eyelid Surgery

GOAL:

Eyelid surgery, otherwise called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of he upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.
It aims to treat:

  • Loose or sagging skin, sometimes disturbing vision

  • Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids

  • Bags under the eyes

It is a good option if
-You have excess skin or fat in the eyelids
-You are a healthy individual
-You do not have serious eye conditions

During consultation
Be prepared to discuss your surgical goal, medical conditions, allergies, medications especially aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.

I will evaluate your general health, examine your eyelids, evaluate the skin excess and the fat bags, take photographs, and discuss your eyelid surgery options, the type of anesthesia, and the likely outcomes.

Prior to surgery
You will be asked to get a Lab testing, take or adjust certain medications, stop smoking for few days before the surgery.

The procedure
The options include locale anesthesia with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
The incision lines are designed so scars are well concealed with the natural structures of the eyelid region. Fat is excised in the inner portion of the upper eyelid and it’s either excised or repositioned in the lower eyelid to restore a more youthful eye contour.
A transconjunctival incision, hidden inside the lower eyelid, is an alternate technique to correct lower eyelid conditions when there’s no skin excess.

Recovery and after surgery
After the procedure, lubricating ointment and cold compresses may be applied on the eyelids for one to two hours.
You will be given specific instructions about how to care for your eyes, your medications including ointments and eye drops.
Initial healing may include some swelling, bruising and sometimes irritation that can be controlled with cold compresses and ointment.

The results are seen within the first postoperative days. It may take few days for bruising to lessen and up to two weeks for swelling to subside.
Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover from surgery. The results will reveal a smooth, better-defined eyelid and surrounding region coupled with an alert and rejuvenated appearance.
