Face Lifting

GOAL:

A facelift or a rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck such as:

  • Sagging in the middle of your face

  • Deep creases along the nose to the corner of the mouth

  • Fat that has fallen or displaced

  • Loss of muscle tone that creates jowls

  • Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and appearance of double chin

It is a good option if:

  • You are a healthy individual

  • You have a sagging in the region of the middle of your face, jowls and neck.

  • You have positive outlook and realistic expectations

During consultation:

  • Be prepared to discuss your surgical goals, medical conditions, allergies and medical treatment

  • I will evaluate your general health status, discuss your facelift options, examine and measure your face, take photographs, discuss likely outcomes and the type of anesthesia.

Prior to surgery:

You may be asked to get a Lab test, take or adjust certain medications, stop smoking, and avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.

The procedure:

The options include intravenous sedation with local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

Depending on the anatomy of your face and the degree of change you’d like to see, your facelift choices include a traditional facelift, limited incision face-lift, or a neck lift.

A variety of other procedures can further enhance the outcome of a facelift. They include:

  • Soft tissue augmentation by fat filling to recontour the facial structure

  • Resurfacing techniques to improve the texture and tone of the skin

  • Wrinkle reduction by injection

The incisions that usually are hidden in the scalp and around the ears are closed with absorbable sutures or stiches. Once healed, the incision lines from a facelift are well concealed within the hairline and in the natural contours of the face and ear.

Recovery:

When your procedure is complete a bandage could gently be placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising. A thin tube may be present to drain any excess blood or fluid.

You will be given special instruction that will include how to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or to take orally to aid healing and when to follow up.

The initial result will be seen on the first post-operative day but it may take several days for swelling to fully dissipate and up to 2 months for incision lines to mature. As swelling subsides, the visible improvement of a facelift appear.

Your final result should not only provide a more youthful and rested appearance, but also help you feel more confident about your age and yourself.
